Is a BBL a Dangerous Procedure? How Innovations and AirSculpt Make it Safer
Is a BBL Dangerous?
If you've ever considered getting your buttocks enhanced, you may have heard concerns pertaining to the Brazilian butt lift (BBL). This surgical procedure can provide a natural-looking shape to the buttocks by transferring fat to the area.
While board-certified plastic surgeons have been performing the BBL for many years, doctors not specialized within the field and their attempts to capitalize on the popularity of the surgery have led to unsafe outcomes at times.
For this reason, in 2015, a task force formed by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) was designed to study the issues related to BBLs to implement newer strategies that would make the procedure much safer.
Summary Of The Study
The ASERF task force published its findings in 2017 with a list of recommendations for surgeons. In 2019, the group did a follow-up analysis about the outcomes of their advice, with the findings being published in April 2020.
The following was noted:
- The occurrence of pulmonary fat embolism, where fat makes its way to the lungs -- a key risk of the procedure -- declined to 1 in 2492, an improvement over 1 in 1030 procedures.
- The mortality rate significantly decreased from 1 in 3448 in 2017 to an outstanding 1 in 14,952 in 2019.
- 94% of surgeons were aware of the new safety recommendations.
- Only 0.8% reported that they still injected the fat into the gluteal muscles and not in the subcutaneous layer over the muscle. Injecting the fat into the muscle increases risk by 400%.
- Only 4% of surgeons reported angling the cannula down; another practice noted high risk.
As you can see, many improvements made their way, but it still doesn't mean that it's safe to assume that all BBLs performed by any surgery are automatically secure.
How To Get A Safe BBL?
Let us first understand how to Brazilian butt lift works. In summary, the procedure consists of a surgeon extracting fat from one area of the body via liposuction to inject that fat into the buttocks to contour its shape and volume.
Patients interested in a safer version of the BBL should understand that there are now more advanced mechanisms to extract and reinject the fat.
Elite Body Sculpture is a proud provider of the most comfortable and accurate BBL in Salt Lake City. The Power Brazilian Butt Lift™ is a minimally invasive fat transfer that doesn't use a scalpel, needle, stitches, or general anesthesia.
This entails that no extensive recovery time or massive scarring is going to be produced after the fact. Additionally, the precision-engineered technique uses the patented AirSculpt® cannula to extract fat and protect the surrounding tissues safely.
Most importantly, this patented technology uses a power-automated mechanism to remove and transfer fat with unparalleled precision. This means it turns off automatically before coming into contact with any muscle layer, drastically reducing risks compared with traditional liposuction-based fat transfers.
